Learning how to work cows
I might have given the impression that we ride wild n crazy over here.
Hedy Rogers-Jones has taken pictures at a couple of our cow practices last month. These photos show how I set novice people or green horses up in roles where they can succeed as cattle crew and herd help. Those roles help the horses get comfortable with cows all around them before we start adding the pressure of turns and faster work.
So, new people, don't be afraid that I'm going to throw you in the deep end without support. We start with the lower pressure roles and learn by watching the other riders and horses work on their pieces.
This gallery shows Katelyn and Levi during their first time working cows.
This gallery shows Samantha and Sara leveling up in their cow work. Sara is a ranch horse and is very cowy. Samantha is helping her horse slow down, and work more efficiently. She has been working on moving quietly through the herd, herd help during cutting practice, and is now starting to work on beginning turns.
This gallery shows Sharon's second time in cutting practice. She is riding my bridle horse Jolene. She worked on settling the herd in her first lesson, and now she is working on bringing out one cow.
Neva has been working on Breeze in lessons for almost two years. She has turned a cow horse reject into a cow horse that is starting to win in ranch horse versatilities.
Tiana and I were working on loose reins.
