Valentino did his second ride in the round pen, he loped easily. So that he keeps being free and forward, I took him out to the big arena with a buddy horse. I have no steering or brakes at this point, I'm just wanting him to freely move forward. With the lazy horses I get out in the big arena by the second ride. On the hot, zippy horses, I make sure that they have a little power steering at first so that I can keep them out of trouble in a big area.
Jolene has helped me with colt starting before, but she's not especially motherly, and Valentino was skeptical of her.
